Back in May, at about the murder hornet stage of quarantine, I decided to try something new and start a pandemic passion project by “opening” a virtual yoga studio.
Why? Some people are sewing masks or running errands for neighbors and those in need, others are protesting on the streets, and I’m hosting free yoga Zoom classes from my house. I recognize my privilege of being healthy and employed, so during this time of great need, this is one way I’ve chosen to give back.
We’re all coping with this upside-down, challenging period in our lives in our own ways. In a time when so much feels out of our control, this felt like a way to focus all my nervous, cooped up energy for good. I really enjoy teaching and sharing yoga with others as I know how transformative the practice can be - physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually (if you’re into that). And I figured what better time to share my yin, calm-ish energy with others than now.
I honestly had no idea if it would work and I had a lot of self doubt as I hadn’t taught yoga IRL since we’d moved to Seattle, all the “good” tech, like fancy webcams and wireless mics, were out of stock (and still are), I worried no one would show up (or come back), etc., etc., etc.
BUT I put my ego aside and decided to try anyways with the hope that if I could positively impact even one person, it would be worth it. Fast forward two months, and while it hasn’t been perfect, I have successfully hosted over 25 classes for over 50 people!
To all the “regulars” and those that have supported me in one way or another through this, I truly thank you. I hope it has been as fun and meaningful for you as it has been for me.
I plan to continue hosting the Tuesday and Thursday livestream Zoom classes, and would love to hear from those that have joined to learn what’s been working well and what could be better. If anyone has feedback - good, bad, ugly - please let me know! I’ve set up an anonymous survey to fill out, and I welcome you to share your thoughts.
